2 LPAs may develop into typhoons

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) yesterday said it is monitoring at least two new low-pressure areas (LPAs) that may develop into typhoons.

PAGASA weather specialist Ana Clauren-Jorda said one of the LPAs was located 440 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora.

“The LPA (in Casiguran, Aurora) has a low chance of turning into a typhoon within the next 24 to 48 hours but we continue to monitor it due to its distance to Philippine landmass. Even if it is only an LPA, it is possible that it will bring rains especially in the Cagayan area and Isabela,” Clauren-Jorda said.

Another LPA the weather bureau is monitoring was located 2,145 km east of Eastern Visayas.

“This LPA has a high potential of becoming a typhoon within the next 24 to 48 hours,” Clauren-Jorda said, adding that this will enhance the southwest monsoon once it develops into a typhoon in the next few days.

PAGASA weather specialist Grace Castañeda said the southwest monsoon continues to affect a big portion of the country.

“The western section of Luzon and Visayas was expected to experience strong rains. This whole week, it will bring rains in Southern Luzon, Visayas and western sections of Mindanao,” Castañeda said.

She added that the northern portion of Palawan and Occidental Mindoro is also affected by the southwest monsoon.

“Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, the rest of Calabarzon and the rest of Bicol region experienced cloudy skies and moderate to strong rains (on Sunday),” Castañeda noted.

According to Castañeda, heavy to intense rains, or from 100 to 200 millimeters of rains, were experienced yesterday in the northern portion of Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Aklan, Antique and Negros Occidental while moderate to heavy rains, or 50 to 100 mm of rains, were experienced in Batangas, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate and the rest of Mimaropa, Western Visayas and Negros Island Region.

For today, Castañeda said 100 to 200 mm of rains are expected in the northern portion of Palawan, Aklan, Antique and Negros Occidental; and 50 to 100 mm of rains in Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, the rest of Mimaropa, Western Visayas and Negros Island Region.

For tomorrow, 100 to 200 mm of rains will continue to persist in the northern portion of Palawan, Aklan and Antique while Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, the rest of Mimaropa, Western Visayas and the Negros Island Region will experience 50 to 100 mm of rains.
