Rappler CEO Ressa inaresto sa NAIA

MANILA, Philippines — Hinainan ng warrant of arrest ang chief executive officer ng online news site na Rappler sa Ninoy Aquino International Airport 1, Biyernes ng umaga.

Iniutos ito ng Pasig Court kaugnay ng kanyang diumano'y paglabag sa Anti-Dummy Law.

Una nang nagbayad piyansa ang anim sa miyembro ng Rappler board na nagkakahalaga ng P90,000 kada tao sa Pasig Regional Trial Court Branch 265 nitong linggo para sa parehong kaso.

Nasa ibang bansa pa si Maria Ressa nang mangyari ito kung kaya'y hindi siya nakapaghain ng piyansa.

"This latest episode is not surprising and we prepared ourselves for it," ayon kay Francis Lim, legal counsel ni Ressa.

Matatandaang hinainan din ng warrant of arrest ng National Bureau of Investigation ang CEO noong ika-13 ng Pebrero para sa kasong cyber libel.

Ayon sa kampo ni Ressa, hindi naman daw nito mapipigilan ang Rappler na magpatuloy bilang mga mamamahayag.

"We believe in the rule of law and it is our fervent hope that we will prevail in the end," wika ni Lim.

Pinagmulan ng kaso

Nagmula ang reklamo sa pagkakansela ng Securities and Exchange Commission sa certificate of incorporation ng news outfit at ng foreign investor Philippine Depository Reciepts ng Omidyar Network.

Inaakusahan sila ng paglabag sa constitutional restriction sa pagmamay-ari at control ng mass media matapos makatanggap ng pera mula sa Omidyar, pondong nilikha ng eBay founder ni Pierre Omidyar.

Ginagamit ang mga PDR para hayaang makapamuhunan ang mga dayuhan sa isang kumpayang Pilipino.

Sinasabi ng Article XVI Section 11. (1) ang sumusunod:

"The ownership and management of mass media shall be limited to citizens of the Philippines, or to corporations, cooperatives or associations, wholly-owned and managed by such citizens."

'Atake sa critical press'

Umani ng batikos ang panibagong kaso ni Ressa mula sa mga media and advocacy groups.

Aniya, isa na naman daw itong atake sa malayang pamamahayag at peryodismo.

"Rappler has clearly become the whipping boy of the Duterte administration as it seeks to silence or intimidate the independent and critical press," sabi ng Nationl Union of Journalists of the Philippines sa isang pahayag.

Hindi sikreto ang kiskisan ng Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte at Rappler dahil sa kritikal nitong pagbabalita sa administrasyon.

Isang taon mula nang pagbawalan si Pia Ranada mula sa pagpasok sa Palasyo, banned pa rin ang mga reporter at correspondents ng Rappler sa mga pagtitipon na dinadaluhan ni Duterte.

"But this intolerant and vindictive government's ham-fisted efforts to humiliate Rappler and its officers and personnel have succeeded only in humiliating itself in the eyes of the world and everyone who values freedom and democracy," dagdag ng NUJP.

Nanawagan din silang manindigan ang lahat laban sa pagtatangkang "busalan" ang tinig ng mamamayan.

Ayon naman sa Bayan Muna, bahagi raw ito ng pagtindi ng mga harassment at "impunity" laban sa mga kritiko ni Duterte.

“This latest arrest smacks of harassment. If Maria Ressa and Rappler were all praises for the government she would not have been arrested this way. Again we express our support to Maria and Rappler and we will hold the line with you," wika ni Bayan Muna chairperson Neri Colmenares.

Sinusugan naman ito ng kanilang representante sa Kamara.

"We are calling on all freedom loving people to band together and condemn any attacks on human rights defenders and media," sabi ni Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate.
