Rappler sa pag-aresto kay Ressa: 'No one is safe'

MANILA, Philippines — Binasag ng online media outfit na Rappler ang kanilang katahimikan kaugnay ng pag-aresto ng National Bureau of Investigation sa kanilang chief executive officer kahapon.

"The filing of the case is preposterous and baseless," sabi nila sa inilabas na pahayag kaugnay ng pagdakip kay Maria Ressa.

Humaharap sa kasong cyber libel si Ressa dahil sa inilabas na artikulo ng kanilang site noong ika-29 ng Mayo, taong 2012 tungkol sa negosyanteng si Wilfredo Keng.

Matatandaang unang ibinasura ni NBI Cybercrime Division chief Manuel Eduarte ang imbestigasyon noong Pebrero dahil sa paglampas ng one-year prescriptive period.

Binuhay naman ng NBI ang kaso matapos ang walong araw at inihain ito sa Department of Justice dahil diumano sa "continous publication."

Iginiit ng media outfit na isinasampa ang kaso kay Ressa sa pagpapalagay na siya ang editor ng istorya kahit hindi naman.

Ayon sa statement, hindi lang media ang inilalagay sa peligro ng ganitong mga maniobra.

"This is a dangerous precedent that puts anyone – not just the media – who publishes anything online perennially in danger of being charged with libel. It can be an effective tool of harassment and intimidation to silence critical reporting on the part of the media. No one is safe," dagdag nila.

Hindi naman daw magpapadaig ang organisasyon sa mga gustong manakot sa kanila.

Sinabi raw ni Ressa na tila ginagawa ng gobyerno ang lahat para patahimikin ang mga journalists, kasama ang pagpipiit sa kanya buong gabi.

"If this is another of several attempts to intimidate us, it will not succeed, as past attempts have shown. Maria Ressa and Rappler will continue to do our jobs as journalists.
