Rappler CEO inaresto ng NBI
MANILA, Philippines — Dinakip ng mga ahente ng National Bureau of Investigation ang chief executive officer ng Rappler na si Maria Ressa dahil sa cyber libel, Miyerkules ng gabi.
"We'll go the NBI," sabi ni Ressa sa isang video habang papalabas ng kanilang himpilan.
Nangyari ang pag-aresto kaugnay ng kuwentong inilabas ng naturang media outfit Mayo ng taong 2012, apat na buwan bago naipasa ang batas na inirereklamo kina Ressa at researcher na si Reynaldo Santos Jr.
Gayunpaman, iginiit ng naghahabla sa kanila na in-update nila ang kwento noong ika-19 ng Pebrero 2014 kung kaya't lumabag na raw sila sa Republic Act 10175 o Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
Alas-singko ng hapon, nagtungo ang mga opisyales ng NBI sa Rappler para maghain ng warrant.
In-issue ang warrant noong Martes, ika-12 ng Pebrero ni Presiding Judge Rainelda Estacio-Montesa ng Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 46.
"It's a shock but we are going," dagdag niya.
Tumanggi naman ang kampo ng nasabing journo na maglabas ng pahayag sa ngayon. Aniya, makikipagtulungan sila sa NBI.
Nagmula ito sa inihaing reklamo ng negosyanteng si Wilfredo D. Keng, na pinangalanang nagmamay-ari ng SUV na ginamit ni dating Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona sa impeachment trial.
Bagama't hindi inireklamo ni Keng ang diumano'y pagmamay-ari niya rito, bumwelta siya sa backgrounder ng storya na nag-uugnay sa kanya sa iligal na droga at human trafficking.
Sa panayam ng ANC, sinabi naman ni Chay Hofileña, investigative desk editor ng Rappler, na susubukan nilang magbayad ng piyansa para sa pansamantalang kalayaan ng kanilang CEO.
"From NBI, of course, we will have to look for a court, a night court, an available judge so that she could file bail," wika niya.
Banggit ni Hofilena, maaaring umabot ng P60,000 ang piyansa.
"It's much higher than the P10,000 for ordinary libel."
Kontra sa sinasabi ng kampo ni Keng, sinabi ni Hofileña na wala silang binago sa detalye ng artikulo at nagtama lang ng typographical error.
Reaksyon matapos ng pag-aresto
Agad naman itong tinutulan ng ilang grupo ng mamamahayag, campus journalists at mga estudyante at tinawag itong atake sa malayang pamamahayag.
"The arrest Rappler CEO Maria Ressa on the clearly manipulated charge of cyber libel is a shameless act of persecution by a bully government," banggit ng National Union of Journalists of the Philippines sa isang pahayag sa Facebook.
Aniya, nangyayari ito dahil pinangungunahan ang gobyerno ng presidenteng galit sa kritisismo.
Kilala ang Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte sa kanyang mga maaanghang na pahayag laban sa mass media at mga bumabatikos.
"We call on all freedom-loving Filipinos to stand with the independent Philipline press in defense of the rights not only of media but of the people. For in suppressing the press it is the people's right to know that is trampled on," dagdag ng national directorate ng NUJP.
Sinegundahan naman ng College Editors Guild of the Philippines ang naturang pagkundena.
"The College Editors Guild of the Philippines denounces this shameless maneuver and Duterte’s obsession with suppressing media practitioners who only seek to uphold truth and the welfare of the Filipino people while distracting and bombarding the masses with false information through its fake news mongers and cohorts," ani Daryl Baybado, deputy secretary general ng CEGP.
Ang CEGP ay grupong binubuo ng iba't ibang progresibong student publications sa buong bansa.
"Dictator wannabe Duterte has continuously proven that he is an enemy of press freedom and the Filipino people," wika ni Baybado.
Sa taunang fair naman ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas-Diliman, kung saan nakatakdang magsalita si Ressa ngayong gabi, ipinaskil sa entablado ang mga katagang "Justice for Maria Ressa" at #DefendPressFreedom.
