Gov’t handa sa ganti ng NPA

MANILA, Philippines - Nakahanda ang gob­yerno sa anumang ganti ng New People’s Army (NPA) matapos maaresto nitong Sabado ang dalawang mataas na lider nito sa Cebu.

“We are fully aware of the possibility and again we are ready to protect the citizenry, our population, and the armed forces are always ready to defend them,” ayon kay Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda.

Naaresto nitong Sabado sa Cebu ang 2 mataas na lider ng Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) na sina Wilma Tiamzon at Benito Tiamzon kasama ang lima katao pa sa bisa ng warrant of arrest dahil sa mga krimen tulad ng murder, multiple murder at frustrated murder.

Si Wilma ang secretary general ng CPP-NPA habang si Benito ang chairman ng grupo.

Subalit mariing binatikos ng National Democratic Front (NDF) ang pag-aresto sa mag-asawang Tiamzon dahil na rin sa umiiral na Joint Agreement on Safety and Immunity Guarantees (JASIG) na nilagdaan ng gobyerno at CPP-NPA-NDF noong 1995.

Iginiit ni Luis Jalandoni ng NDF na illegal ang pag-aresto kina Wilma at Benito na kapwa sakop ng JASIG pero iginiit naman ng gobyerno na walang anumang paglabag na nagawa ang mga awtoridad ng maaresto ang 2 NPA leaders.

Iginiit pa ni Jalandoni na pawang mga consultants ng NDF ang mag-asawang Tiamzon kaya hindi dapat arestuhin.

“But through no fault of government, the NDF failed to open their own files that purportedly contained the photos and true identities of the said NDF consultants. This failure had the effect of rendering the JASIG inoperative for those using aliases and those who are not directly involved in the peace process. If indeed Benito Tiamzon was listed under an alias, he is no longer covered by the JASIG,” wika naman ni Presidential Peace Adviser Teresita Deles.

Aniya, si Wilma ay tumakas mula sa kanyang detention noong Dis­yembre 26, 1989 at nag-jumped bail habang nasa kalagitnaan ng peace talks bago pa maging epektibo ang JASIG.
