Pang Movies

Batangas Governor Vilma Santos’s appearance in an indie movie dubbed Ekstra: The Bit Player seems to be starting a trend among big stars in local showbiz.

Already, may ilan na ring box-office stars, yes, tulad ni Ate Vi, who would want to try the genre. But, like her, they want muna na mabasa ang script ng pelikulang ino-offer sa kanila. And, of course, kung sino ang director.

Did we hear it right na AiAi delas Alas is willing to try the genre? Ganun din daw si Aga Muhlach.

Ayon kay Atty. Joji Alonso, who owns Quantum Films, producer of Esktra, tatlong taon ding “ligawan’’ at kung ilang scripts din ang ipinabasa niya kay Ate Vi bago ito pumayag na gumawa ng indie movie for her film firm.

‘‘When I was represented the script of Ekstra, na-in love ako kaagad sa story at script. Lalo na sa role na aking gagampanan.

‘‘Imagine, bukod sa challenging for me ang role, the film will somehow be a tribute to the ‘unsung’ heroes ng showbiz? And how many are they in the business?

She was, after all, a bida kaagad sa kanyang first movie, Trudis Liit, followed by Ging.

At almost 13 years old, naka-team up na niya si Edgar Mortiz.

Known, among their following especially, as the Vi and Bot tandem, they teamed up in films which were all money makers.

And the rest, sabi nga mismo ni Ate Vi, is history.

For her role in Ekstra, kusang dini-glamorize ni Ate Vi ang kanyang sarili.

In the past, when he was just a set designer, of course, may mga pelikula si Mayor Vi then na puwedeng sabihin niyang pinagsamahan nila. Ganun man directing her finally in a movie project is a dream come true for him.

‘‘When we were working on Ekstra madalas naririnig kong sinasabi ni Direk Jeffrey kay Atty.

Ate Vi romped away with the best actress trophy for her first indie film!

Other awards won by the movie included best screenplay for Direk Jeffrey and co-writers Zig Dulay and Antonette Jadaone. The NETPAC award went naman to producer Atty. Joji. Sila rin ang Audience Choice awardee.

Ekstra might as well be cited, too, as the only movie na maraming important guest stars bukod pa kina Piolo Pascual, Marian Rivera, Eula Valdez, at Richard Yap.

‘‘Tagahanga ako ng series na Be Careful With My Heart.

Kasama na, of course, sina Direk Joey Reyes at Marlon Rivera, who both appeared as themselves (directors) sa pelikula.

‘‘At bago ko nga pala makalimutan, maraming salamat sa Star Cinema for agreeing to distribute Ekstra in theaters nationwide,’’ sabi ni Ate Vi.

Ekstra will hit the theaters on Aug. 14.
