Tokyo Olympics maaaring kanselahin dahil sa COVID-19

TOKYO – Inihayag ka­hapon ng isang senior member ng International Olympic Committee na kung magiging mapanga­nib ang pagdaraos sa 2020 Olympic Games da­hil sa coronavirus outbreak ay mapipilitan ang mga organizers na tulu­yan nang kanselahin ang event.

Nakatakda ang Tokyo Olympics sa Hu­lyo 24 hanggang Agosto 9.

Ilang Olympic qualifying tournaments na ang inalis sa China kung saan sinasabing nanggaling ang COVID-19.

Sinabi ni Dick Pound, da­ting Canadian swimming champion na nasa IOC simula noong 1978, na gagawa sila ng desis­yon sa dulo ng buwan ng Mayo.

“In and around that time, I’d say folks are going to have to ask: ‘Is this under sufficient control that we can be confident about going to Tokyo or not?’” wika ni Pound sa ex­clusive interview sa The Associated Press.

“A lot of things have to start happening. You’ve got to start ramping up your security, your food, the Olympic Village, the hotels. The media folks will be in there building their studios,” dagdag pa ng IOC official.

Sa kabila ng panganib na kanselahin ang 2020 Tokyo Games ay hinika­yat pa rin ni Pound ang mga atleta na ituloy ang ka­­nilang pag­sasanay.

Halos 11,000 atleta ang inasahang lalahok sa 2020 Tokyo Olympics bu­kod pa sa 4,400 na sasabak sa Paralympics na nakatakda sa Agosto 25.

“All indications are at this stage that it will be business as usual. So keep focused on your sport and be sure that the IOC is not going to send you into a pandemic situation,” wi­ka ni Pound.
