Philippine men at women’s team maganda ang simula sa World Chess Olympiad

MANILA, Philippines — Tinalo ng Philippine men’s at women’s teams ang San Marino at Mozambique sa parehong 4-0 iskor para simulan ang kanilang kampanya sa 43rd World Chess Olympiad sa Batumi, Georgia noong Lunes ng gabi.

 

Dinaig nina United States-based GM Julio Catalino Sadorra, International Masters Jan Emmanuel Garcia at Haridas Pascua at FIDE Master Joseph Mari Turqueza sina Paul Rossini, Giancarlo Berardi, Enrico Grassi at Danilo Volpinari ng San Marino.

Pinatumba naman nina WGM Janelle Mae Frayna, Catherine Secopito, Shania Mae Mendoza at neophyte Marie Antoinette San Diego sina Vania Fausto Da Vilhete, Katina Efentakis, Suzete Vicente Jefo at Andre Sitoe Cheila, ayon sa pagkakasunod, ng Mozambique.

Sa second round ay makakatapat ng mga Filipino, ang No. 54 sa nasabing biennial 11-round tournament, ang 48th ranked Slovakians na tinalo ang Mali, 3.5-1.5.

Lalabanan naman ng mga Pinay sa second round ang 35th ranked Slovenians, giniba ang Zambia, 3.5-.5.

Ipinahinga si second board player GM John Paul Gomez, naipanalo ng mga rookies na sina Garcia, Pascua at Turqueza kasama si Turqueza ang kanilang mga laban.

Sa second round ay maglalaro si Gomez sa board two, habang sina Sadorra, Garcia at Pascua ay sa boards one, three at four at si Turqueza ang ipapahinga.

Ang women’s squad ang siya ring maglalaro sa second round.

“We’re facing a tougher team but we’re hoping for the best,” wika ni GM Jayson Gonzales, ang women’s non-playing coach.

Hangad ng nationals team na suportado ng Philippine Sports Commission, na mapaganda ang kanilang 58th place finish sa Baku, Azerbaijan noong 2016 sa men’s at 34th place performance sa women’s.
