Spain pinagharian ang FIBA European Championship

LILLE, France — Humakot si tournament MVP Pau Gasol ng double-double para ihatid ang Spain sa 80-63 panalo laban sa Lithuania para muling angkinin ang European basketball championship title.

Ito ang ikatlong korona ng Spain sa nakaraang apat na torneo matapos makuntento sa bronze medal noong 2013.

Nakamit naman ng Lithuania ang kanilang panga-lawang sunod na runner-up finish makaraang mabigo sa France sa finals noong 2013.

Dahil sa kanilang pagpasok sa finals ay kapwa nakuha ng Spain at ng Lithuania ang direct slots sa 2016 Olympics sa Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“It was an incredible championship,” sabi ni Gasol. “We went through struggles  early on but the team responded well and with our backs to the wall we understood that we had to play better defense.”

Sa harap nina King Felipe VI at tennis star Rafael Nadal, kaagad na kinuha ng mga Spaniards ang 13-point lead sa first quarter at hindi na nilingon pa ang mga Lithuanians. Ang Hari ang nagsabit ng mga medalya sa Spanish players.

Tumapos naman si Gasol, ang 35-anyos na Chicago Bulls center na may dalawang NBA championship rings sa Los Angeles Lakers, na may 25 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 blocked shots at 1 steal para hirangin bilang Most Valuable Player.

Naipatalo ng Spain ang dalawa sa una nilang tatlong laro dahil hindi naglaro sina Mark Gasol, Serge Ibaka, Juan Carlos Navarro at Ricky Rubio.

Tumipa sina Matas Kalneitas at Renaldas Seibutis ng tig-13 points para sa Lithuania, habang naglista si star Jonas Valanciunas ng 10 points at 9 rebounds.

Nakawala naman ang France sa third quarter para gibain ang Serbia, 81-68 at sikwatin ang bronze medal.
