MANILA, Philippines — Kasabay ng pagtatapos ng kampanya ng Philippine athletics team sa 31st Southeast Asian Games ay ang pagreretiro ni dating long jump queen Marestella Torres.

Tinapos ng 41-anyos na si Torres ang kanyang athletics career bitbit ang isang gold medal noong 2009 Asian Championships sa lundag na 6.51 meters at nagdomina siya sa SEA Games noong 2005, 2007, 2009 at 2011 editions.

“At dito nagtapos ang aking SEA Games journey,” ani Torres. “Ito ang a­king pang 9th SEA Games at the age of 41. 18 years na lumaban sa SEA Games and 22 years sa national team para magbigay ng karangalan sa bansa.”

Bigo siyang makakuha ng medalya sa Vietnam SEA Games.

Nag-uwi rin siya ng silver noong 2005 Asian Games at dalawang bronze noong 2002 Asian Champions at noong 2016 Asian Beach Games.

Tatlong beses siyang nakasali sa Olympics noong 2008 (Beijing, China), 2012 (London) at 2016 (Rio de Janeiro) at kasalukuyang hawak ang SEA Games record na 6.71m na inilista niya noong 2011 edition sa Palembang, Indonesia.

Samantala, isinara ng na­tional athletics team ang kanilang kampanya sa Vietnam SEAG sa 5 golds, 7 silvers at 14 bronzes na malayo sa nahakot na 11-8-8 medals noong 2019 Manila edition.
