Walang aasahang anumang medalya ang Pinas sa London - Puentevella

MANILA, Philippines - Lalaban man ay mahihirapan ang 11 Pambansang atleta na lalaro sa London Olympics na manalo ng kahit anong me­dalya.

Ang Olympics ay gagawin mula Hulyo 27 hanggang Agosto 12 at para kay POC chairman Monico Puentevella, mas mabuti na ituon ang isipan sa kawalan ng medal­yang mapapanalunan sa edisyong ito.

“Don’t expect any medal,” wika ni Puen­tevella. “Like in our past participation, I’m sorry to say that among the 11 athletes we are sending to London, only a few who we can say have slim chances for one medal.”

Ang mga panlaban ay sina archers Mark Javier at Rachel Ann Cabral-dela Cruz, swimmers Jessie Khing Lacuna at Jasmin Alkhaldi, long jumper Marestella Torres at 5,000m runner Rene Herrera, boxer Mark Anthony Barriga, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, shooter Brian Rosario, judoka Fil-Japanese Tomohiko Hoshina at BMX rider Fil-Am Daniel Caluag.

Siyam na medalya pa lamang ang na-panalunan ng Pilipinas sa 20 Olympics na sinalihan mula 1924.

Ngunit hindi pa nanalo ang bansa ng kahit na anong medalya mula 1996 sa At­lanta nang sungkitin ni Mansueto Velasco ang pilak sa light flyweight division sa boxing.

Ito ang ikalawang pilak ng bansa matapos unang kumuha si boxer Antho­ny Villa­nueva noong 1964 Tokyo Games.
