Garcia aminadong walang aasahang medalya sa London

MANILA, Philippines - Aminado si Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Richie Garcia na isang ‘suntok sa buwan’ kung makakapag-uwi ng anumang medalya ang 11 national athletes sa nalalapit na 30th Olympic Games sa London.

Subalit naniniwala si Garcia na makikipagsa­bayan ang nasabing mga atleta sa kani-kanilang mga events sa 2012 London Games na nakatakda sa Hulyo 27 hanggang Agosto 12.

“I’m confident that these athletes are ready to perform well, ready to represent our country as best as they can. I am not predicting any medal tally or anything but I would say that they would give it their best,” ani Garcia kahapon sa PSA sports forum sa Shakey’s sa U.N. Avenue, Manila.

Huling nanalo ng me­dalya ang bansa sa Olym­pic Games noong 1996 matapos sumuntok ng silver medal si light flyweight Mansueto ‘Onyok’ Velasco, Jr.

Kasalukuyan nang na­­sa kani-kanilang mga trai­ning camps sa London sina swimmers Jasmine Alkhaldi at Jessie Khing Lacuna, skeet shooter Brian Rosario, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, long jumper Marestella Torres at long distance runner Rene Herrera.

Ang iba pang miyembro ng delegasyon ay sina bo­xer Mark Anthony Barriga, judoka Tomohiko Hoshina, BMX rider Daniel Caluag at archers Mark Javier at Rachel Ann Cabral. (RC)
