BMX rider pasok sa London Games

MANILA, Philippines - Umabot na sa walo ang mga Filipino athletes na makikita sa aksyon para sa darating na 30th Olympic Games na nakatakda sa Hulyo 27 hanggang Agosto 12 sa London.

Kinumpirma ni Philippine team Chief of Mission Manny Lopez ang paglalaro ni Fil-Am BMX rider Daniel Caluag sa 2012 Olympics matapos makatanggap ng e-mail buhat sa London Organizing Committee for Olympic Games (LOCOG).

Si Caluag ang tanging Asian BMX rider na nabig­yan ng kumpirmasyon ng International Cycling Fe­deration (UCI) para sa 2012 London Olympics.

“I knew from the start that Caluag would get it. He really trained and worked hard to earn the slot,” sabi ni Philcycling president at Tagaytay City mayor Bambol Tolentino.

Ang 25-anyos na si Ca­luag, ang mga magulang ay tubong Bulacan at nani­rahan sa United States, ay nakakuha ng sapat na ranking points mula sa si­nalihan niyang tatlong qualifying tournaments.

Hindi naman sinu­werte ang isa pang BMX rider na si Alexis Vergara na makakuha ng sapat na ranking points sa UCI BMX world championship sa Birmingham, England kamakailan.

Maliban kay Caluag, ang iba pang kakampanya sa 2012 London Olympics ay sina swimmers Jessie Khing Lacuna at Jasmine Alkhaldi, boxer Mark Anthony Barriga, skeet shooter Brian Rosario, long jumper Marestella Torrres at steeplechaser Rene Herrera at judoka Tomohiko Hoshina.

Umaasa pa si Lopez na madaragdagan ang mga Filipino athletes na sasabak sa nasabing quadrennial event mula sa archery at weightlifting.
