3 bronze sa SMART/Phl jins

MANILA, Philippines - Tatlong taekwondo jins ng SMART/Philippines ang kumuha ng bronze me­dals sa katatapos na World Junior Taekwondo Championships sa Sharm El Sheikh sa Egypt.

Ang tatlong kumolekta ng mga tansong medalya sa kani-kanilang weight division ay sina Keno Anthony Mendoza (-59-kilogram), Aaron James Galita (-45kg) at Mathew Padilla (-48kg).

Ito ang unang medalya ng bansa sa nasabing torneo matapos ang apat na taon. Ang mga huling Filipino medalist ay si Jyra Marie Li­zardo noong 2008 sa Turkey.

“Our fighters displayed brilliant skills and courage against competitors from 89 other countries. They deserved to win,” sabi ni team delegation at Phi­lip­pine Taek­wondo Association vice president Sung Chon Hong.

Ginitla ni Galita si world number one Hyeok Yu via superiority sa quarterfinals matapos ang sudden death fourth round na nagtapos sa 0-0 tie.

Tinalo rin ni Galita si Cyprus bet Pantelis Dirnou, 8-2, at Thailand pride Ramnarong Sawekwiharee, 3-0, sa sudden death fourth round bago nakatikim ng isang 2-8 kabiguan sa semifinals laban kay Seyed Tabari ng Iran na na­talo naman kay Russian Borris Krasnov sa finals para sa gold medal.

Ginapi naman ni Padilla ang kanyang Korean rival, 21-11, sa eliminations kasunod sina Russian Sergey Zemtsov, 11-7, Brazilian Adriano Junior, 9-4, at German Yorulmaz Mehmet-Akif, 8-7, para sa bronze medal.

Si Iranian Abolfazl Jouybari ang tumalo kay Padilla sa semifinals.
