'Smokin' Joe' Frazier pumanaw dahil sa liver cancer

WASHINGTON - Namatay na ka­hapon si dating world heavyweight cham­pion Joe Frazier, ang unang nag­pa­bagsak kay boxing legend Muhammad Ali, sa edad na 67-anyos mula sa sa­kit na liver cancer.

Si "Smokin' Joe" Frazier ay namatay sa Philadelphia isang buwan matapos ma­tuklasan na siya ay may liver cancer.

“Joe doesn’t want to see anybody, the way he is now,” sabi ng kanyang ma­nager na si Les Wolff. “I think you can understand why. He’s a proud man.”

Iniluklok si Frazier sa International Bo­xing Hall of Fame noong 1990.

Tinapos niya ang kanyang boxing ca­reer mula sa 32-4-1 win-loss-draw ring record kasama ang 27 knockouts.

Inangkin ni Frazier ang Olympic heavyweight boxing gold medal para sa United Sta­tes sa 1964 Games sa Tokyo, Japan at pinagharian ang world heavyweight di­vi­sion mula 1970 hanggang 1973.

Sa kanilang 'trilogy' ni Ali noong 1970's, si Frazier ang unang nagwagi bago siya din­o­mina ni Ali sa sumunod nilang dalawang pagtatagpo.

Nakuha ni Frazier ang world heavyweight title noong 1970 mula sa pagpa­pabagsak kay champion Jimmy Ellis no­ong 1967.

Si Ellis ang nakakuha ng titulo ni Ali nang umayaw itong lumaban sa Vietnam War dahilan sa kanyang Muslim beliefs.
