Gold sa Olympics target ng ABAP

MANILA, Philippines – Matapos mag-uwi ng isang gold isang silver at isang bronze medal sa nakaraang 16th Asian Games sa Guangzhou, China, ang pinapangarap namang gold medal sa 2012 Olympic Games sa London ang puntirya ng Amateur Bo­xing Association of the Phi­lippines (ABAP).

Ito ang inihayag kaha­pon nina ABAP chairman Manny V. Pangilinan at pre­sident Ricky Vargas sa espesyal na pagtatanghal ng PSA sports forum sa Dra­gon Gate Restaurant.

“We look forward to the (2012) London Olympics, iyon ang aming next prog­ram for ABAP,” ani Pangili­nan. “Iyon ang talagang da­pat asikasuhin natin.”

Sa 2010 Guangzhou Asiad, sumuntok ng gold me­dal si Rey Saludar sa men’s 52-kilogram division matapos umiskor ng 13-11 panalo kay Chang Yong ng China, habang silver naman ang nakuha ni lady boxer Annie Albania sa women’s 48-51kg. class at bronze ang nakopo ni Victorio Saludar sa men’s 46-49kg. category.

Natalo si Albania kay Ren Cancan ng China, 5-7, samantalang nabigo naman si Victorio kay Birzhan Zhakypov ng Kazakhstan, 1-12.

 Bago naman makalahok sa 2012 London Games, kailangan munang manalo ang mga national pugs sa qualifying tournament sa Baku, Azerbaijan sa Setyembre ng 2011.

“We have to qualify as many boxers as we could for the London Olympics,” wika ni Pangilinan. “Actually, ang kailangan ng ABAP is to sitdown by itself and consult with the boxing community kung ano ang maitutulong nila in preparation for the Azerbaijan event.”   

Wala pang gold medal na nakukuha ang sinumang Filipino athlete mula sa Olympic Games.

Ang pinakamalapit ay ang silver medal nina light flyweight Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco, Jr. sa 1996 Atlanta Games at featherweight Anthony Villanueva noong 1964 Tokyo Games.

“We’ll certainly try our best to qualify, ayokong mawalan tayo ng pag-asa,” ani Pangilinan. “We’ll look at what went wrong, what went right and the goal is to qualify for the London Olympics.”

Sa kabuuang kampanya ng Team Philippines sa 2010 Guangzhou Asiad, kumolekta ang mga atleta ng kabuuang 3 gold, 4 silver at 9 bronze medals para sa pang 18th place na kinalagyan rin ng bansa noong 2006 Asian Games sa Doha, Qatar mula sa 4-6-9 medals.
