Karanasan at kabataan formula ng RP team noong 1954

MANILA, Philippines - Ipinakita ng 1954 national basketball team na maaaring ikumbinasyon ang karanasan sa kaba­taan.

Sa likod nina co-captains Caloy Loyzaga at Lau­ro Mumar kasama ang apat pang Olympians at ilang bituin ng Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA) at collegiate leagues, tumersera ang RP team sa World Championship sa Rio de Janeiro.

Hanggang sa ngayon ay wala pang nakakapantay na anumang Asian team sa nasabing pagi­ging third-placer ng mga Filipino sa World Championships.

Makakasama ng natu­rang koponan sina Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, Ceferino Garcia, Francisco “Pancho Villa” Guilledo, ang mag-amang Jose “Cely” at Anthony Villanueva, Teofilo Yldefonso, Simeon Toribio at Miguel White sa pagkakaluklok sa Philippine Sports Hall of Fame sa Mayo 5 sa Maynilad Hall ng Manila Hotel.

Pararangalan rin si Loyzaga, naging pamba­to ng ­RP Team mula 1951 hang­­gang 1963 at bi­­llang coach noong 1967 hang­gang 1968. Naging miyem­bro siya ng Mythical Selection sa 1954 World Championships pati na sa 1960 Asian Championship kasama si Most Valuable Player Car­los Badion.

Pinakamatangkad no­on sa kanyang kapanahunan bilang 6-foot-3, ang tinaguriang “The Great Difference” ng namayapang si radio announcer Willie Hernandez ay bumandera sa paghahari ng RP Team noong 1951, 1954, 1958 at 1962 Asian Games pati na sa 1960 at 1963 Asian championships.

Makaraang magretiro noong 1964, naging mentor si Loyzaga ng gold-winning team sa 1967 Asian tilt at ng national squad sa 1968 Mexico Olympics.
