Alcala, nagningning sa Singapore

MANILA, Philippines - Winalis ni Mark Alcala ang korona sa unang Li-Ning Youth International badminton, nang maungusan nito ang mga pinapaborang kalaban kabilang na ang Indon na si Ali Auliansyah, 21-19, 21-16 sa finals ng 11-under boys’ division sa Singapore kamakailan.

Ipinakita ang pamatay na porma, dinaig din ni Alcala ang isa pang top ceontender na Indonesian na si Joverian Mahesa, sa tatlong sets ng round of 16 patungo sa tagumpay kay local bets Chen Rhui Sheng at Ong Zi Jian upang isaayos ang title showdown kay Auliansyah.

“He played a superb game and with confidence. He knew he can beat this kids,” ani team manager at coach Conrado Co, ang tumutulong sa Philippine Badminton Association youth development program sa ilalim ng pamamahala ni president at dating First Lady Amelita “Ming” Ramos.

Sumungkit naman ng bronze medal sina Roberto Pineda at Ethan Malelang sa 15-under boys’ doubles ng event, na humakot ng partisipante mula sa Chinese-Taipei, Hongkong China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka at Thailand.

Nakarating din ng quarterfinal round ang tambalang Alcala at Keeyan Gabuelo ng 13-under boys doubles habang si Ming Ramos Youth Cup champion Malvinne Alcala ay nabigo sa kanyang kampanya sa 15-under girls singles, ngunit umabot naman sa quarterfinal phase.

Ang iba pang nakausad sa Last 8 ay sina Gelita Castilo, isa pang Ramos Youth Cup winner, sa 17-under girls’ singles, at ang tambalang Alcala-Castilo sa 17-under girls doubles at Paul Vivas at Peter Magnaye pair sa 19-under boys doubles.
