RP golfers kumpiyansa sa kanilang kampanya sa Laos SEAG

MANILA, Philippines - Walang nakakalamang at wala ring nakakatiyak ng panalo.

Sa pagiging 'wide open race' ng kompetisyon, kumpiyansa ang Philippine golf team sa kanilang tsansa para sa gintong medalya sa darating na 25th Southeast Asian Games sa Laos.

Ito ang inihayag kahapon nina national team captain Pablo Soon sa lingguhang PSA sports forum sa Shakey's sa U.N. Ave-nue, Manila na itinataguyod ng Outlast Battery, PAGCOR at Accel. 

Lalaruin ang golf event sa bagong-tayong Booyoung Golf Course sa Saythani District sa Vientiane, ayon kay Soon kasama sina ladies team coach Carmelette Villaroman, player Tonton Asistio at National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP) executive officer Jake Ayson.

"It will be the first time all participants will be playing in the course, so no one has the upper hand as far as familiarity of the venue is concerned," wika ni Villaroman.

Si Villaroman ay humataw ng gold medal noong 1995 SEA Games sa Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Bukod kay Asistio, ang iba pang miyembro ng national men's golf team ay sina Mhark Fernando, Jonel Ababa at Rufino Bayron, habang sina Dottie Ardina, Mia Piccio at Ichiro Ikeda ang kakampanya sa ladies division.

Nabigo ang bansa na makapag-uwi ng gold medal sa nakaraang SEA Games sa Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand sa nakolekta ng tatlong silver medals galing kina Anya Tanpinco at ang men's at ladies teams.

Bago ito, tig-tatlong gintong medalya naman ang nakuha ng mga Filipino par busters noong 1991 (Manila), 1993 (Singapore) at 1997 (Jakarta) SEA Games.   (Russell Cadayona)
