Women's boxing kasama na sa Olympic Games

MANILA, Philippines - Makakasama na ang wo-men’s boxing sa calendar of events ng 29th Olympic Games sa London sa 2012.

Ito ay matapos pagtibayin ng International Olympic Committee (IOC), nasa ilalim ng pangulo nitong si Jacques Rogge, ang pagbilang sa women’s boxing sa 2012 London Games.

Sa kanilang pulong sa Berlin, sinabi ni Rogge na ang tatlong weight divisions na paglalabanan ay ang flyweight (106 lbs-112 lbs), lightweight (123 lbs-132 lbs) at middleweight (152 lbs-165 pounds).

Ang boxing competition lamang ang tanging events sa Olympic Games na walang women’s class.

Sa pagbilang sa tatlong wo-men’s category, binawasan naman ng IOC ang events sa men’s division sa 10 mula sa dating 11, dagdag ni Rogge.

Noong 2005 Philippine Southeast Asian Games, apat na gintong medalya ang nasuntok nina pinweight April Appari, flyweight Annie Albania, bantamweight Jouvilet Chilem at lightweight Mitchell Martinez.

Tanging si Albania lamang ang nakapag-uwi ng gold medal mula sa 2007 SEA Games sa Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

Bukod sa women’s boxing, ipinapasok rin ang golf at rugby para sa 2012 London Games.

“In the end, the decision came down to which two would add the most value,” ani Rogge. “Golf and rugby will be a great addition to the games...They have global appeal, a geographically diverse lineup of top iconic athletes and an ethic that stresses fair play.” (Russell Cadayona)
