Nietes magsasanay na kay Roach sa Wild Card sa US

MANILA, Philippines – Nakatakdang magtungo si Filipino world minimumweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes sa United States sa Sabado para simulan ang paghahanda sa Wildcard Boxing Gym ni trainer Freddie Roach.

Idedepensa ni Nietes ang kanyang hawak na World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimumweight title laban kay Mexican challenger Manuel Vargas sa Hulyo 18 sa Jalisco, Mexico.

Ito ang pangatlong sunod na title defense ng 27-anyos na pambato ng Murcia, Bacolod City matapos talunin sina Nicaraguan Eddy Castro via second-round KO noong Agosto 30 ng 2008 sa Cebu City at si Mexican Erik Ramirez mula sa isang unanimous decision noong Pebrero 28 sa Mexico City.

Ibinabandera ni Nietes ang 24-1-3 win-loss-draw ring record kasama ang 14 KOs, habang tangan naman ng 28 anyos na si Vargas ang 26-3-1 (11 KOs) slate.

Si Vargas ang kasalukuyang interim WBO minimumweight titlist makaraang talunin sina Daniel Reyes (fourth-round KO) at Walter Tello (unanimous decision).

Bago magtungo sa Wildcard Gym ni Roach sa Hollywood, California, nagsanay muna nang husto si Nietes sa ALA Gym sa Cebu City.

Si Nietes ang pang apat na Pinoy na may hawak na world boxing crown matapos sina five-world division champion Manny Pacquiao, flyweight king Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Jr. at light flyweight ruler Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Villoria. 

Makakasama ni Nietes sa pagbiyahe sa US si bantamweight AJ Banal (19-1-1, 16 KOs) na maghihintay naman ng kanyang makakalaban. (Russell Cadayona)
