Silver lang kay Basadre

BANGKOK – Kinapos ang pagsisikap ni Genebert Basadre na masungkit ang gintong medalya para sa Philippines ng katatapos na 31st King’s Cup na ginanap sa Gnongwongwan Mall dito.

Hindi nakuha ng 25 anyos na produkto ng Misamis Oriental boxing program ni Gov. Oscar Moreno, ABAP Region X president sa ilalim ng pamamahala ni Asian Games gold medalist Bobby Jalnaiz, ang tempo ng laro patungo sa finals nang blangkahin ito ni Apichet Sansit ng host Thailand, 13-0.

Gayunpaman, ginamit pa rin ni Basadre ang kanyang estratehiya kontra sa Thai ngunit hindi ito umubra nang magpakawala naman ng kombinasyon si Sansit na dalawang beses lamang nasagot ng Pinoy.

 “Thai boxers have improved a lot. They come at you more daringly and that seems to have a disconcerting effect on our boxers, leaving them waiting for opportunities instead of creating them. That said, perhaps the 0-13 score against Basadre was a bit of a stretch.” Wika ni Ed Picson pinuno ng RP delegation at executive director ng ABAP.

Bumalik ng bansa ang Philippine delegation noong Biyernes Santo bitbit ang silver ni Basadre, at 2 bronze mula naman kina Gerson Nietes at Joegin Ladon para sa ikalimang overall place sa likuran ng nagkampeon na Thailand-A (7 golds), Korea (1 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze), Netherlands (1 gold) at Thailand B (3 silver at 1 bronze).

Ang huling pagkaka-taon na kumuha ng ginto ang Philippines sa torneong ito ay noong 2005 mula kay Harry Tanamor na nagwagi sa light flyweight division. At ang pinakamagandang tinapos nila ay noong 1991 kung saan hinakot ni Ronald Chavez, national coach na ngayon, at Roehl Velasco ang gold medal.
