Marquez, umaasa pa rin ng trilogy kay Pacquiao

Hanggang ngayon ay umaasa pa rin si Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez na magkukrus pa kanilang mga landas ni Filipino world four-division champion Manny Pacquiao sa ikatlong pagkakataon.

 Sakaling talunin ni Marquez si Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz para sa bakanteng World Boxing Organization (WBO) at World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight belts, posibleng maitakda ang kanilang ‘trilogy’ ni Pacquiao. 

“Absolutely,” wika kahapon ni Richard Schaefer, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) ng Golden Boy Promotions, sa panayam ng Boxingscene.com. “The winner of this fight could move up. But at lightweight, there is a lot of opportunites there, too.” 

Matapos mauwi sa draw ang kanilang super featherweight fight noong Mayo ng 2004, umiskor naman si Pacquiao ng isang split decision upang agawin kay Marquez ang dating suot nitong World Boxing Council super featherweight crown noong Marso 15 ng 2008.

 “Hopefully, there is a third fight betwen us,” sambit ng 35-anyos na si Marquez, umakyat sa lightweight division kung saan niya tinalo si Cuban Joel Casamayor via 11th-round TKO.

 Makaraan namang tanggalan ng 30-anyos na si Pacquiao ng WBC super featherweight belt si Marquez, inalisan naman ni “Pacman” ng WBC lightweight title si Mexican-American David Diaz via ninth-round TKO noong Hunyo 28 bago talunin si Oscar Dela Hoya via 8-round TKO sa kanilang non-title welterweight bout noong Disyembre 6.

 Nakatakdang sagupain ni Marquez si Diaz para sa bakanteng WBO at WBA lightweight belts, binakante ni Nate Campbell matapos maging ‘overweight’ sa kanilang upakan ni Ali Funeka ng South Africa kamakailan, sa Linggo (US time) sa Toyota Center sa Houston, Texas. (Russell Cadayona)
