Tangka ni Fil-American James B. Walsh na higitan ang kanyang Philippine at South-east Asian Games records sa pagsisimula ng Olympic stint limang US-based swimmers sa star-studded swimming competitions ngayon sa National Aquatics Center na mas kilala bilang Water Cube.

Sasabak si Walsh sa second heat ng 200m butterfly kung saan ang kanyang personal best ay two minutes, 20.07 seconds na hangad niyang mahigitan upang maging kaunahang Filipino at Southeast Asian na maka-abot sa two minute barrier at makapasok sa semifinals.

“His best time will be a new RP and SEA Games record. I think he will go below two minutes,” ani swimming president Mark Joseph. “In his heat, if he breaks the 2:00:00 mark he will bring the SEA Games to a higher level.”

Mabigat ang misyon ni Walsh dahil ang kanyang oras ay ang 103rd sa buong mundo at may 86 swimmers sa buong mundo na lumalangoy ng dalawang minuto sa taong ito.

Higit sa lahat, lalangoy din ang sikat na American swimmer na si Michael Phelps.

Ang magandang balita ay lalangoy ang 21-gulang na si Walsh sa lower group ng mga swimmers sa Heat.

Gayunpaman ang lahat ay nakatuon kay Phelps na naghahangad higitan ang seven-gold medal haul noong 1972. (Gerry Carpio)
