PSC tiwala sa Team Philippines na tutungo sa Beijing Olympics
Ito na ang inaasahang magiging pinakamagandang kampanya ng Team Philippines sa Olympic Games.
Sinabi kahapon ni Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William “Butch” Ramirez na tiwala siya sa kakayahan ng 15 national athletes na sasabak sa nalalapit na 2008 Olympic Games sa Beijing, China sa Agosto 8-24.
Ang mga ito ay sina national taekwondo jins Tshomlee Go at Maria Antonette Rivero, swimmers Miguel Molina, JB Walsh, Ryan Arabejo, Daniel Coakley at Cristel Simms, divers Shiela Mae Perez at Rexel Ryan Fabriga, boxer Harry Tañamor, archer Mark Javier, shooter Eric Ang at weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz.
“Kung palaban sila Tshomlee Go at Tony Rivero, si Harry Tanamor at ‘yung iba nating athletes, baka this might be a good Olympics for our country,” wika ni Ramirez. “I think the team is ready. We appropriated P30 million for the delegation at ako at ang mga Commissioners have been monitoring their training since day one.”
Kamakailan ay binisita ni Ramirez, kasama si Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) chairman at Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) president Robert Aventajado sina Go at Rivero sa Korea para tutukan ang ginagawang paghahanda ng dalawang taekwondo jins.
“I have a very strong feeling that they might win the gold with the way their are training right now,” wika ni Ramirez kina Go at Rivero, natalo sa quarterfinal round noong 2004 Olympic Games sa Athens, Greece.
Wala pang Filipino athlete na nakakuha ng gold medal mula sa Olympic Games, habang ang dalawang silver medal nina featherweight Anthony Villanueva at light flyweight Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco, Jr. ang pinakamataas na karangalan ng bansa.
Si Filipino world four-division champion Manny Pacquiao ang tatayong ‘flag bearer’ ng Team Philippines para sa 2008 Beijing Games matapos italaga ni Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
