4-man rowing team asam ang Olympic slot

Sa hangaring makakuha ng Olympic seat para sa 2008 Beijing Games, umalis na kahapon ang isang four-man national rowing team na sasabak sa Asian Qualification Regatta sa Abril 25-27 sa Shanghai, China.

Ang naturang tropa ay kinabibilangan nina Southeast Asian Games veteran Joe Rodriguez, Alvin Amposta, Nilo Cordova at Mioelle Gabiligno.

“Sa single sculls, ‘yung mga first six placers ang magkuqualify for the Olympics, while in the double sculls ‘yung first three naman ang papasok sa Olympics,” wika ni Amateur Rowing Association of the Philippines (ARAP) president Benjie Ramos.

Si Rodriguez ang ipinalit kay 2000 Sydney Games campaigner Benjie Tolentino na nagkaroon ng rib injury habang nasa kasagsagan ng paghahanda noong Marso.

Maliban sa 5-foot-9 na si Tolentino, ang tanging Filipino rower na nakalahok sa Olympic Games ay si Ed Mayrina, isa nang miyembro ng national coaching staff, noong 1998 Seoul Games sa South Korea.

Bukod sa China, makakaagawan rin ng mga Filipino rowers sa Olympic ticket para sa 2008 Olympic Games sa Beijing sa Agosto, ang Japan, South Korea, Iran, Taiwan at Hong Kong, ayon kay Ramos.

Kakasa si Rodriguez sa men’s single sculls, habang si Gabiligno ay sa women’s singles sculls at sina Amposta at Cordova naman sa men’s double sculls event. (RCadayona)
