Titulo ni Donaire ang target ni Darchinyan

Kung wala rin lang na itatayang korona si world flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Jr. ay imposible nang maitakda ang kanilang rematch ni Armenian Vic Darchinyan.

Sinabi kahapon ni Elias Nasser, manager ni Darchinyan, na sa super flyweight division lamang lalaban ang dating Olympian matapos maagawan ni Donaire ng International Boxing Federation (IBF) at International Boxing Organization (IBO) flyweight belts noong Hulyo 7.

Inisip na ni Gary Shaw, ang promoter nina Donaire at Darchinyan, na itakda ang rematch ng dalawa bago matapos ang taon.

“Unless he brings something to the table, he won’t be getting a free shot at the world title, unless he is a world champion,” ani Nasser. “I’m not going to throw Vic in against Donaire for no reason.”

Matapos agawin sa 32-anyos na si Darchinyan ang IBF at IBO flyweight title via fifth round TKO, matagumpay na naidepensa ng 24-anyos na si Donaire ang nasabing mga korona kontra kay Mexican challenger Luis Maldonado via seventh-round TKO noong Disyembre 1.

Nakansela ang ikalawang sunod sanang title defense ni Donaire laban kay Lebanese challenger Hussein Hussein na nakatakda sa Abril 18 sa Aviation Center sa Dubai, United Arab Emirates bunga ng kakapusan sa pondo ng mga promoters.   

Nauna nang inihayag ni Donaire na sakaling wala nang gustong humamon sa kanya sa flyweight division ay aakyat na siya sa super flyweight category kung saan lalabanan ni Darchinyan si IBF titlist Dimitri Kirilov ng Russia.

“The only super flyweight world title that is still available is Fernando Montiel (WBO). If he does fight for a (super flyweight) world title, he will definitely be our next fight,” ani Nasser sa tubong General Santos City na si Donaire. (RC)
