Cuban coaches handa nang gabayan ang RP boxers

Umakyat na kahapon sa Baguio City ang dalawang Cuban coaches na kinuha ng Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) para tumulong sa Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP).

Personal na gagabayan nina Juan Enrique Steyners Tissert at Dagoberto Rojas Scott ang mga Filipino pugs sa Teachers’ Camp sa Baguio City na naghahanda para sa darating na Olympic qualifying tournament sa Kalmaty, Kazakhstan sa Marso.

“First of all, we should know what we want to achieve and then set our goals,” wika ng 57-anyos na si Tissert, isa sa mga tinitingalang boxing coach sa Cuba.

Si Tissert, kasama ni Raul Fernandez Liranza sa Cuban national boxing team, ay tatanggap ng monthly salary na $1,800 (P72,000), samantalang $1,200 (P48,000) naman ang makukuha ng 41-anyos na si Scott.

Si Liranza ang gumabay kay light flyweight Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco, Jr. para sa silver medal noong 1996 Olympic Games sa Atlanta, Georgia.

Si light flyweight Harry Tanamor pa lamang ang Filipino pug na nakasuntok ng kaisa-isang Olympic berth para sa 2008 Beijing Games. (Russell Cadayona)
