Gonzales sasabak din sa ASEAN Masters sa Indonesia

Sasabak din sa aksiyon si International Master Jayson Gonzales sa ASEAN Masters Circuit Chess Championships mula Enero 8 hanggang 20 sa Tarakan, Indonesia.

Target ni Gonzales, head coach ng Far Eastern University (FEU) ang kanyang ikatlo at pinal na Grandmaster norm para makumpleto ang kanyang GM status kasunod ang mga kababayang GMs Eugene Torre, ang namayapang si Rosendo Balinas, Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., Buenaventura “Bong Villamayor”, Nelson Mariano II, Mark Paragua, Wesley So at Darwin Laylo.

“I would like to thank  Cong. (Butch) Pichay (NCFP president), chairman (Butch) Ramirez (PSC chairman), Mr. (Mark) Molina (FEU sports director) and the Philippine Army for their undying support of my GM title quest, I will do my very best for flag and country,” ani Gonza-les.

Inimbitahan si Gonza-les na lumahok sa GM (grandmaster closed tournament) Event B, Category VII, at kailangang makaipon ng 8.5 points para maging pinakaba-gong grandmaster ng bansa. Mabigat ang ma-kakalaban niya sa kan-yang grupo na kinabi-bilangan nina top seed GM Mark Paragua (Philippines, 2521), GM Cerdas Barus (Indonesia, 2479), IM Ashot Nadanian (Armenia, 2436), FM Rolando Nolte (Philippines, 2412), IM Oliver Barbosa (Philippines, 2410), GM Ardian-syah H (Indonesia, 2409), FM Tirta Chandra P (Indonesia, 2383), IM Mok Tze Meng (Malaysia, 2346), FM Syarif Mahmud (Indonesia, 2344), Sugeng Prayitno (Indonesia, 2312) at WIM Irine Kharisma Sukandar (Indonesia, 2266).

Nakopo niya ang first GM norm sa 2004 Calvia Open sa Calvia, Spain kung saan siya ay nakai-pon ng 7.0 points sa nine rounds. Kinapos naman siya ng kalahating puntos sa World Chess Olympiad sa Majorca, Spain na may 8.0 points sa 11 matches. Si Gonzales ay nasa ika-6 na puwesto sa individual classification sa Board 4.

Nasungkit niya ang second GM norm sa Asian Zonal elims sa Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia noong Setyembre 2005.
