RP Riders tagumpay sa Tour of Thailand

Isang magarbong pagtatapos ang isinaga-wa ng national road team sa taong ito para sa Philippine cycling matapos tanghaling overall team champion ng Tour of Thailand na nagtapos kaha-pon sa mountain resort city ng Chiang Mai.

Ang hindi nila nagawa nitong nakaraang 24th Southeast Asian Games sa Nakhon Ratchasima ay nagawa nila sa kare-rang ito na may kabuuang distansiyang 999 kms na lumakbay sa northern Thailand matapos pangu-nahan ang general team classification mula sa Day One pa lamang ng six-stage competition.

Iuuwi ng nationals ang ikalawang tropeo mula sa Tour at bilang overall champion, awtomatikong napangunahan nila ang ASEAN division ng competition.

Ang well-travelled team ng Japan ay puma-ngalawa lamang sa RP team na pinangunahan ni Irish Valenzuela ang, 20- gulang na rider na puma-ngalawa sa unang stage at siyang best-placed Pinoy cyclists sa karera.

Kabilang sa top 10 sa general team classification ng Category 2.2 race na sanctioned ng Union Cycliste Internationale ay ang Thailand sa third, Iran sa fourth, kasunod ang Malaysia, ang mixed team Giant Asia, Merida Netherlands, Germany, Denmark at Vietnam.

May kabuuang 17 teams ang nagsimula ng karera ngunit apat ang umatras kabilang ang Thailand B squad na naubusan ng riders dahil sa injury at kapaguran.

Si Ahad Kazemi ng Iran ang overall individual champion kasunod si Indonesian Tonton Susanto na kumarera para sa Dannish team, Hosein Jahanbanian ng Iran at SEA Games ITT gold me-dalist Mahawong Prajak ng Thailand.

Si Lloyd Reynante ay ninth place at si Victor Espiritu, winner ng SEA Games gold medal sa men’s point race ng track, ay 16th at si Ronald Gorantes ay 37th.

“The riders were at their peak,” ani head coach Jomel Lorenzo. “The program for 2007 was to have the riders reach their peak in the SEA Games and it was timely that the Tour of Thailand came just two days after the Games ended.”
