Smart National Open, papagitna

Ang mga posibleng pumalit sa puwesto nina Olympic Games silver medalists Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco, Jr. at Anthony Villanueva at Asian Games gold medal winners Joan Tipon at Violito Payla.

 Ito ang inaasahang madidiskubre sa pagsuntok ngayon ng 2007 Smart National Open, Youth and Women Amateur Boxing Championships sa Cagayan De Oro City.

 Ayon kay Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) president Manny T. Lopez, ang naturang torneo ang isa sa magiging basehan ng pagpili ng mga bagong talento na magiging miyembro ng national team sa mga susunod na taon.

 Maliban sa Cagayan De Oro, lalahok rin ang mga amateur fighters ng Davao, Sorsogon, La Union, Puerto Princesa City, Zamboanga City, Camiguin, Olongapo City, Baguio City, General Santos City, Pampanga, Mandaluyong City, Manila, Ilocos, Pangasinan, Davao del Norte, North at South Cotabato, Bicol, Surigao City at mga tropang mula sa Luzon, Visayas at Mindanao.

 Inaasahan ng Cagayan De Oro na muli silang pagmumulan ng mga katulad nina 2006 Doha Asian Games gold medal winner Violito Payla, 2005 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Genebert Basadre at 1990 Olympic Games bronze medal winner Roberto Jalnaiz. 

Ang mga kompetisyon na paglalabanan sa naturang weeklong boxing meet ay ang kids 11-13 years old, school boys 13-15 under, cadet 15-17 under, juniors 17-19 under, senior 19-32 under at female division 17-34 under. 

Samantala, pangungunahan naman ni Olympic at world champion maker Dr. Alcides Sagarra Caron ng Cuba ang isang seminar at clinic sa hanay ng mga local coaches sa kabuuan ng nasabing boxing event.

 Si Caron, dumating sa Cagayan De Oro kahapon ng umaga, ang gumawa ng pangalan nina Olympic Games gold medal winners Felix Savon, Teofilo Stevenson, Felix Balado at Joel Casamayor. (Russell Cadayona)
