3 Pinoy pug umusad sa finals

Pumasok sa finals ang tatlong miyembro ng Philippine boxing team na sasabak sa Doha Asian Games sa Tammer Cup International Boxing Championship kamakailan lamang sa Tampere, Finland.

Pinabagsak nina light-weight Genebert Basadre, flyweight Violito Payla at bantamweight Joan Tipon ang kani-kanilang mga kalaban sa semifinals upang magkaroon ng pag-asa ang bansa sa tatlong gold medals sa isang linggong torneong ito na kinatampukan ng mahuhusay na boksingero mula sa Asia, Europe at Africa.

Nagrehistro sina Payla at Basadre ng Referee Stopped Contest-Out-classed (2nd round) victories laban kina Canadian Ryan Rannelli at Danish Nogaad Rugemalira, ayon sa pagkakasunod.

Pinabagsak naman ni Tipon, tulad ni Basadre na isa ring Manila Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, ang local bet na si Al Khaghani sa third round.

Nagkasya naman sina light-welterweight Delfin Boholst at welterweight Francis Joven sa bronze medals matapos mabigo sa kanilang semifinal bouts.

Lumuhod si Boholst kay Finnish Jussi Koivula, 30-15 habang nagtamo ng sugat si Joven sa kaliwang mata sa third round bago yumukod sa Aprikanong kalaban.

Susunod na makakalaban ni Payla si Hungarian Olympian Pal Bedak, habang masusubukan naman ang lakas ni Basadre laban kay Frenchman Jean Gomis at sasagupain naman ni Tipon si Canadian Isho Shiba.

Natuwa si Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines President Manny T. Lopez. ‘‘This is a good sign as we prepare to campaign in Doha."

Ang biyahe ay suportado ng Olympic Solidarity Movement, Philippine Sports Commission at Pacific Heights.
