3rd ASEAN Para Games sumambulat na

Nagtipon-tipon ang mga atletang may kapansanan mula sa iba’t ibang dako ng Southeast Asia sa makasay-sayang Rizal Memorial Track-Oval stadium para sa pormal na pagbubukas ng 3rd ASEAN Para Games.

Sa temang ‘Triumph of the Competitive Spirit, isang makulay na opening rites ang sinaksihan ng tinatayang 20,000 katao na binubuo ng mga atleta at opisyal mula sa 10 bansang kalahok, mga kinatawan ng 897 barangays at 130 public at private schools mula sa Manila.

Pormal na tinanggap ni Manila Mayor Lito Atienza ang mga partisipante sa kanyang welcome speech at binigyan ng inspirasyon ang mga differently abled athletes.

"We commend the organi-zers for providing the region’s disabled sector an endeavor that will help guide their paths to becoming assets of society," ani Mayor Atienza. "Let me congratulate all the partici-pants, who in our book are already winners by just giving us the opportunity to see them showcase their athletic prowess and giving us the honor to host them."

Pinangunahan ni Philip-pine ASEAN Para Games Organizing Committee (PAPGOC) chairman Michael Barredo, ang mga opisyal na dumalo sa opening rites kasama sina ASEAN Para Sports Federation president Zainal Abuzarin ng Malaysia, Senator Pia Cayetano, DSWD Secretary Lualhati Pablo, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose Co-juangco, Jr. at Philippine Sports Commissioners Ricardo Garcia, Leon Montemayor at Jose Mundo.

Mahigi 1,000 dancers ang nagpalabas ng Filipino cultural dances habang ang world-class performer na si Lea Salonga, ang kumanta ng theme song ng palaro na "The Power of my Dream". Nag-tapos ang programa sa saya-wan at tugtugan kabilang ang Ati-Atihan drumbeats, bago ang pagpasabog ng confetti at balloon drops at ang pang-finale ay ang 10-minute fire-works display na hudyat ng pagsisimula ng aksiyon sa isang linggong multi-sports event na hatid ng PSC, PCSO and DPWH, at suportado ng PLDT-Smart, Systems Technology, Inc., Pag-ibig, SM Shoemart, Philpost, Philspada, NBN-4, Manila Bulletin, at ng City Government of Manila, katulong ang American President Line, Pfizer Inc., Red Ribbon, Crossover 105.1, Sports Radio, IBM Computers, Mettaphione, at GSIS.

Magsisimula ang aksiyon ngayon sa chess sa Century Park Sheraton Hotel at swimming sa Rizal Memorial Swimming Pool, kasabay ng centerpiece athletics compe-tition na may 21 finals event sa Rizal Memorial Track Stadium.

Sa Biyernes naman magsi-simula ang aksiyon sa badminton sa RMSC Bad-minton Hall, gayundin ang wheelchair basketball sa Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) Gymnasium, wheel-chair tennis sa RMSC Tennis Courts at judo sa Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Sa Sabado sisimulan ang powerlifting sa EAC Gymna-sium, table tennis sa GSIS Gym at Ninoy Aquino Stadium, at goalball sa San Andres Sports and Civic Center.
