Kasabay ng pahayag na wala nang pag-asa pang maibalik ang basketball event sa 23rd Southeast Asian Games, sinabi kahapon ni Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco, Jr. na ito na ang tamang pagkakataon upang kunin ng mga Filipino ang overall championship.

"This is the 23rd Southeast Asian Games and we have never won the overall championship. I think now is the best chance to win the overall cham-pionship," ani Cojuangco.

Ayon sa dating Tarlac solon, ngayon lamang nagkaroon ang mga atleta ng pagkakataon na maging ‘competitive’ sa SEA Games.

"Talagang ang ating mga atleta ay nagkaroon ng pagkakataon na mag-training mabuti," sabi ni Cojuangco. "Tama ang nutrition nila ngayon. Tama ang training nila. Nagkaroon sila ng pagkakataon to compete and train abroad."

Noong 1991 Manila SEA Games, kumolekta ang mga Filipino athletes ng kabuuang 91 gintong medalya sa ilalim ng 92 ng overall champion Indo-nesia.

Ngayong 2005 Philippine SEA Games, inaasahan ng POC at ng Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) na hahakot ang mga Pinoy ng mula 92 hanggang 128 gintong medalya, ayon sa prediksyon ni National Training Director Mike Keon.

"Really our chances of winning the overall championship is the best we’ve ever had in the 22 holdings of the Southeast Asian Games," wika ni Cojuangco.

Inulit naman ni Cojuangco na nagdesisyon na ang SEAG Federa-tion Council na ibasura ang basketball event kahit na gusto pa itong maibalik ni Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

"Talagang wala ng basketball sa SEA Games. Iyan kasi ang naging decision ng Southeast Asian Games Federation Council eh," ani Cojuang-co. (Russell Cadayona)
