AB Leisure, Citibank, Phil. Star umusad sa semis

Humatak ang AB Leisure at Citibank ng magkapares na 2-1 panalo kontra sa kanilang kalabang RCBC at HSBC, ayon sa pagkakasunod, habang pinataob naman ng The Philippine Star ang Pilipinas Shell, 3-0, upang umusad sa semifinal round ng corporate division ng mayamang JVC Open Badminton Championships na ginanap kahapon sa Glorietta Activity Center sa Makati City.

Pinamunuan ng men’s double tandem nina Albee Benitez at Ricky Morales, humatak ang AB Leisure ng 15-10, 15-11 tagumpay kontra kina Francis Camarista at Ferdie Salvador ng RCBC bago sumandal kina Elaine Lao at Brandon Chan para umiskor ng 15-3, 15-0 panalo laban kina Joan Dioso at Eric Victoria sa mixed doubles.

Nakuha naman ng RCBC ang ladies doubles nang magwagi sina Vicky Tupas at Ana Cuisia kina Amy Ramirez at Pauline Santiago, 15-3,15-9.

Hindi rin pahuhuli ang Citibank na sumandal sa tambalang Daniel Rupinta at Miguel Acosta para sa 15-9, 15-3 panalo laban sa HSBC duo nina Ging-goy Lotho at Ramon Osmeña sa men’s doubles bago sinundan ng panalo nina Pia Manzano at Ricky Frias sa mixed doubles, 15-5, 15-0, na nagdala sa kanila sa semis ng isa sa anim na events na nakalinya sa taunang event na itinataguyod ng electronics giant JVC.

Winalis naman ng The Philippine Star ang kanilang kalabang Pilipinas Shell nang mapagwagian nila ang ladies, men’s at mixed doubles event.

Tinalo ng tambalan nina Miguel Belmonte at Chester Cordero ang Shell pair nina Alfred Reyes at Ed Magpantay, 15-2, 15-0. Nanalo din ang ladies doubles nina Ana Filamor at Annalyn Delgado, 15-0, 15-4 at mixed doubles pair nina Eloisa Belmonte at Doddie Gutierrez, 15-3, 15-4.

Nauna rito, idineklara ni Toshinori Yokokawa, pangulo ng JVC Phils, ang opening ng torneo sa maikling opening rites na dinaluhan nina JVC Phils. general manager Kazue Salud, Atty. Faustino Salud, chairman ng JVC Phils., Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, Steve Hontiveros ng Philippine Olympic Committee, Cynthia Carrion ng Department of Tourism, Philippine Badminton Association president at former First Lady Amelita ‘Ming’ Ramos, PBA vice president Gen. Edgar Aglipay at Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Noli Eala.
