PCA Open Tennis Championships

Nagpamalas ng galing ang mga Vietnam SEA Games-bound na sina Anna Patricia Santos, Alyssa Anne Labay at Czarina Mae Arevalo upang makarating sa quarterfinals ng P400,000 Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open Tennis Championships sa PCA indoor courts sa Plaza Dilao.

Si Santos na nag-champion sa Olivarez Cup, Coca-Cola Open at Hilado Open sa taong ito na nagbigay sa kanya ng No. 1 ranking, ay umiskor ng 6-4, 6-1 panalo kontra kay No. 13 Aileen Rogan para kalabanin ang mananalo sa pagitan nina No. 7 Ivy de Castro at No. 11 at national soft tennis player Divine Escala.

Pinabagsak naman ng second-ranked na si Labay ng Bacolod City si Annie dela Pena, 6-2, 6-4, para makausad laban kay sixth seed Deena Rose Cruz, na nanalo sa 6-4, 6-4 kontra kay Bernar-dine Sepulveda ng La Salle.

Pinabagsak naman ni Arevalo, ang defending champion at fourth seed na si Hazel Tanedo, 6-0, 6-0, at susunod nitong maka-kalaban si fifth seed Michelle Panis, na nagposte ng 6-2, 6-2 sa di kilalang si Julie Em Botor.

Naghabol naman ang Lucena City-based na si Zoleta, ang third seed na nanalo ng Escudero Cup noong nakaraang taon, bago pabagsakin si Karen Reyes, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5, para ipuwersa ang quarterfinal showdown laban kay No. 8 Josephine Paguyo, na nanalo naman kay No. 10 Catherine Flores, 7-5, 6-4.

Samantala, dinimoralisa naman nina defending men’s doubles champion Johnny Arcilla at Michael Mora III sina Gabby Remigio at Karl Santamaria, 6-2, 6-0, para makarating sa third round ng event na ito na hatid ng Dunlop at sponsored ng Diadora, PLDT, Procter and Gamble, Coca-Cola, Copacabana, San Miguel Corporation, Stronghold, Little Lawrence, PVL Restaurant at ng Philippine Star.
