Marathon ok na sa Vietnam SEG

Mas lalong lumakas ang kampanya ng bansa para sa nalalapit na 2003 Southeast Asian Games na gaganapin sa Vietnam nang magdesisyon ang organizers na isama na ang men’s at women’s marathon event sa athletics competition.

Ang nasabing development ay agad na inihayag ni Philippine Olympic Committee president Celso Dayrit kahapon makaraang makatanggap ng abiso mula sa Malaysian Olympic Committee secretary general Datu Siek Kok Chi, na siyang dumalo sa SEAG Federation Council meeting sa Hanoi noong nakaraang Biyernes.

"This is good for us," ani Dayrit hinggil sa pagkakasama ng men’s at women’s marathon sa SEAG program."This will boost our gold medal chances the defending champions are both Filipinos--Roy Vence and Christabel Martes."

Ayon kay Dayrit, naging matigas ang Vietnamese organizers sa kanilang naunang desisyon na magkaroon lamang ng 32 sports disciplines na paglalabanan sa nasabing biennial meet, ngunit pumayag rin na magdagdag pa ng pitong iba pang events kabilang ang men’s at women’s marathon.

Ang limang iba pang bagong events ay ang men’s at women’s skeet sa shooting, snooker team sa billiards/snooker, men’s over 105-kilogram sa weighlifting at women’s sabre team sa fencing.

Umapela rin si Dayrit para isama ang bowling at golf, subalit ibinasura ito ng Vietnamese.
