Pagbabalik ng fencing at wushu sa SEA Games nagpal

Inaasahang magpapalakas sa kampanya ng Philippines sa nalalapit na Southeast Asian Games ang pagbabalik ng dalawang events na kinukonsiderang pinangkukunan ng ginto ng Philippines -ang fencing at wushu, at ang impresibong performance ng boxing, taekwondo at billiards and snooker athletes.

Para sa tsansa ng mga atleta, isang linggo bago simulan ang SEA Games sa Malaysia, sinabi ni Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Carlos ‘Butch’ Tuason na nakasalalay ang magandang pagtatapos ng bansa sa mga atletang kalahok sa mga nabanggit na events.

Ang fencing at wushu na naging pangunahing medal producers ng RP team sa mga nakaraang SEA meets ay hindi isinama sa calendar of events nang ganapin ang biennial competitions sa Brunei.

"Hopefully, we would get the ussual deliveries from these two events as well in the three other medal-rich events where we are given good chances," ani Tuason.

Idinagdag ni Tuason na ang swimming, shooting, bowling at track and field ay maaari ding makapagbigay ng sorpresa.

Ang delegasyon na nakatakdang umalis ng grupo-grupo simula sa susunod na linggo.

Sinabi ni SEA Games Task Force chief Richie Garcia na naglaan ang pamahalaan ng P195 milyon upang masiguro na ang 353 atleta na makikibahagi sa naturang palakasan ay maayos na nakapaghanda.

"When the SEA Games is over, we would like to be able to rightfully say that the PSC had provided the athletes with the support which was within it’s means," ani Garcia. "The other countries supposedly have spent more for training but we feel the Filipino athletes have made tremendous gains in their own localized preparations. The fighting spirit will overcome the gap."

Ang Philippines ay nanalo ng 19 medalya sa Brunei kung saan may tig-apat na gintong medalya ang Snooker at Taek-wondo habang ang golf at shooting ay may tigalawa.

Ang dating world champion na si Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes na nanalo ng gintong medalya, dalawang taon na ang nakakaraan ang muling mamumuno sa 11-man billiards at snookers contingent.
