8 Pinoy boxers pa-Cuba

Aalis sa Linggo ang Team Philippines na pangungunahan ng tatlong beterano ng nakaraang taong Sydney Olympics patungong Cuba upang magpakita ng aksiyon sa tatlong boxing tournaments sa loob ng dalawang linggo bilang preparasyon sa Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian Games ngayong Setyembre.

Babanderahan nina lightfly Danilo Lerio, bantam Arlan Lerio at light-welter Romeo Brin na sumabak sa Sydney Games ang eight man squad na kinabibilangan din nina flyweight Violito Payla, feather Ramil Zambales, lightweight Joel Barriga, welter Reynaldo Galido at lightmiddle Junie Tizon.

Ang mga nabanggit na fighters ay lalaban sa mahigpit na Cordova Car-din Championships na nakatakda sa Abril 5-10 sa Holguin Province bago babalik sa Havana para sa dalawang invitational tournaments--ang Rober-to Balado Cup sa Abr. 11-13 at Juvenile Cup sa Abr. 14-17.

"These boxers are among our best and the Cordova meet is just the first of high-caliber tournaments they will compete in leading to the SEA games. These overseas tournaments will also help us determine the final selection of our SEA Games team," ani amateur boxing president Manny Lopez.

Pangungunahan ni Lopez ang delegasyon at makakasama sina coaches Gregorio Cali-wan, Nolito Velasco at Alex Arroyo at referee/judge Jesus San Esteban, Jr.

Ito ang ikalawang international na biyahe ngayong taon ng mga miyembro ng national boxing pool matapos ang Fujian Friendship Games noong nakaraang Pebrero sa China kung saan tinanghal na overall champion ang Philippines sa kanilang tatlong ginto, tig-isang pilak at tanso.
