MANILA, Philippines — The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) on Wednesday led the commemoration of the 149th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Fathers Mariano Gomes, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora, popularly known as Gomburza with the unveiling of a historical marker and its 150th anniversary logo.

The unveiling of the declaration marker and launching of the GOMBURZA@150 logo was held at the Gomburza monument along Burgos Street, Ermita, Manila.

The rites were headed by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso, NHCP chair Rene Escalante, Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, National Museum Chairman of the Board Evangelina Lourdes Arroyo-Bernas, NM Director General Jeremy Barns, NHCP Executive Director Restituto Aguilar, and Pearl Saprid, daughter of Solomon Saprid, sculptor of the Gomburza monument.

Puyat accepted the historical marker on behalf of Intramuros Administration.

“I would like to emphasize the following to highlight this commemoration, first, monuments are not just an edifice. Monuments serve as a narrative of our history. They remind us of the courage patriotism shown by our people in the face of death,” the tourism chief said.

“Secondly, monuments represent our identity. In times of significant challenges such as the current pandemic, we each yearn for a sense of belonging, for connection and community and a reminder of who we are as a people and as a country,” she added.

Meanwhile, the launching of the GOMBURZA@150 logo is in anticipation of the sesquicentennial anniversary celebration next year that hopes “to shed light in the circumstances that led to the execution of the three Filipino martyr priests on Feb. 17, 1872 and the lives of other Filipinos imprisoned and exiled.”

Aside from the unveiling of the historical market and the logo, NHCP also held blessing of the Gomburza tomb at the Paco Park Cemetery and wreath-laying ceremonies at the Gomburza execution site in Rizal Park.
