Lando victims get life-saving handsets
MANILA, Philippines – Sun Cellular, along with MyPhone, pays it forward by bringing a total of 100 disaster-ready handsets to Filipinos recently ravaged by typhoon Lando.
Exclusively powered by Sun, the MyPhone My112 SOS devices have been turned over to the Office of Civil Defense-Cordillera Administrative Region for use of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management team during rescue and relief operations in Lando-hit areas. Sun is the mobile brand of Digitel Mobile Philippines Inc., a subsidiary of PLDT.
“Recognizing that reliable communications is an important component of disaster response, Sun and MyPhone have collaborated to make these handsets available to the affected communities so they can reconnect with their loved ones or seek help from the authorities,” said Ariel Fermin, PLDT EVP and head of consumer business group.
Each My112 SOS Phone is a durable handset for simple connectivity needs, but is packed with features that come in handy in times of emergency and disasters. It has a dedicated SOS button that triggers a siren sound, which is perfect as a signaling device in times of danger or when in need of rescue during disasters. It is armed with a flashlight and its 6000 mAh battery can also double as a Powerbank, a useful feature in case of power failures. It also glows in the dark and is water-resistant – perfect for challenging conditions during disasters.
Every device is bundled with free call and text from Sun.
While the disaster ready devices will be distributed for free to Lando-affected areas, the handset is now available at Sun stores in Metro Manila and Central Luzon.
“We do this to help make things easier for people who are facing and will face emergencies,” said Joel Lumanlan, Sun VP for postpaid marketing.
Sun, via Smart, has also installed call and text stations in these areas to ensure that everybody can coordinate and communicate with their loved-ones.
