Thousands run to save the Marikina watershed
MANILA, Philippines – For the first time since its four-year run, a record-breaking 3,000 avid and new runners joined the annual “Takbo para sa Marikina Watershed 2015” last September 20, 2015. The fun run aimed to promote environmental awareness and raise funds for the continuing rehabilitation of the Marikina watershed, which was damaged during typhoon Ondoy in 2009.
Winners in the 3K category were Vincent Nicoyco and student Pamela Mae Marcelo, while Ika Jomao-As and April Quiabao emerged as victors in the 5K category. Dominating the 10K category, on the other hand, were Michael Busitu and Emily Nillyguin.
The event was organized by the Marikina City Government in cooperation with the Rotary Club of District 3800. The run is also supported by Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), BDO Foundation, Armscor, Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF), Coats Manila Bay, Smart Communications, Inc., Manila Water, One Meralco Foundation, PLDT, San Miguel Beer, Ortigas & Co., Rapid City Realty, and Development Corporation, Mr. Danny Chua of Rotary Club of Marikina West, and Roger Py.
Proceeds of the event will go to the tree-planting and protection programs of the Marikina Watershed Green Foundation Inc.
