Dagupan senior citizens enjoy free ballroom dancing lessons

Eva Visperas - The Philippine Star

DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines  – Early this month, lolos and lolas in this city  found themselves gyrating to the beat of rumba and cha cha as they enjoyed free ballroom dancing sessions to help them maintain their health and well-being.

The program, through the initiative of Mayor Belen Fernandez, aims to provide the city’s senior citizens with activities that nurture both the mind and body and help them become fit and healthy. The first batch of senior citizens had fun with their free dance lessons last Mar. 2.

Aside from the dancing programs, the elderly can also take part in board games sessions at the recreational center to keep their minds sharp.

The elderly can also visit the city’s recreational center, which has an exercise area where they can use exercise equipment to maintain their physical health. An open space can also be used for dance and tai chi sessions.

The mayor added that she will continue to pursue projects for the elderly such as free cataract screening and operation, flu and pneumonia immunization, twice a month medical and dental mission, milk feeding, free movie viewing, ‘Kwento ni Lola Basyang’ storytelling in day care centers, and a literacy program, among others.

The city also advances towards promotive, preventive, curative, and supportive care for senior citizens.

“We are committed to provide the needs of the elderly sector as recognition for their role in the community and their part in shaping what Dagupan it is now. They have taken care of us and now it’s our time to give back to them,” the mayor said.
