PCG to put up search and rescue base in Capiz

Jennifer P. Rendon - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will establish its first search and rescue base in Capiz, with groundbreaking ceremonies held last Saturday at Culasi Port in Roxas City.

Commodore Athelo Ybañez, PCG-Western Visayas chief, said that the plan of establishing a search and rescue (SAR) facility has long been in the pipeline of PCG.

Why Roxas City? “It has a lot advantages. Panay is situated in the center of the Philippine archipelago, making it easier to respond in times of need. The area is also in close proximity to urban centers,” Ybañez said.

The P200-million project will include facilities such as a mini-hospital to treat survivors, maritime rescue monitoring center, berthing space for PCG search and rescue vessels, helipad and a multipurpose hall that can be utilized for sports and training activities.

The facility will also be capable of supporting other Coast Guard activities such as maritime law enforcement, oil spill response and maritime security operations.

Ybañez added the SAR base would surely enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the PCG in maritime disaster preparedness and response, thus helping ensure a safe, clean and secure maritime environment.

Leading the groundbreaking rites were Transportation and Communications Secretary Emilio Joseph Abaya and Interior and Loal Government Secretary Manuel Roxas III, who also attended the blessing of the new Coast Guard Station Roxas building.
