Canada gives $1 M to Central Mindanao

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), is providing CDN$1 million (about P43 million) in assistance to residents of Central Mindanao.

The funding is part of the World Food Program’s (WFP Protracted Relief and Recovery Operations (PRRO) project that aims to assist internally-displaced persons, returnees and other resource-challenged households in conflict-affected communities in Central Mindanao.

The project will also indirectly support the goal of peace-building in Mindanao by bringing increased socio-economic stability to affected areas.

“I am hopeful that Canada’s partnership with the WFP will positively impact those living in conflict-affected areas, especially since indicators on poverty, nutrition, and basic education suggest these communities are far below the Philippines’ national average,” Canadian Ambassador Christopher Thornley said.

Canada’s support will enable WFP to complement the rehabilitation efforts in the area. The project will be implemented through food and cash-for-work activities and other training initiatives targeted at rehabilitating livelihood opportunities, and through feeding programs in schools and communities directed at pregnant women, young mother, and children under five years.
