DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines —Four young Dagupeños who had brought home international recognitions were honored recently for the Jose Rizal Youth Excellence awards as the highlight of the 64th Agew na Dagupan (Dagupan Day) celebration held at the Don Alipio Fernandez Sr Astrodome.
The awardees were led by Sudoku multi champion Sarah Jane Cua who was the 2011 champion in the first Beijing Sudoku Tournmanet (18 and under category) held in Beijing, China.
Cua had been last year’s champion also in the 3rd Brand’s Asia Pacific Open Sudoku Championship in Singapore and had been a medalist in international Mathematics competitions held in various parts of the world.
Tony Sy Encinaries was also honored for being the 2008 gold medalist in world taekwondo culture exposition and represented Team Philippines, Kyurugi Division in Mojo, South Korea and also gold medalist in poomsae in the same international event.
Mark John Dy was also a recIpient of the 2010 certificate of distinction in the Australian Mathematics Competition. He was also the 2009 bronze medalist in the 5th International Mathematics Contest in Singapore and bronze medal awardee in the China Primary Olympiad in Chinba also in the same year.
John Paul Calicdan received two bronze certificates in the International Mathematics Competition 2010 in Tianjin, China and credit awardee in the Australian Mathematics Competition.
He was also the 2009 gold medalist in the Philippine International Mathematics Competition (team category) held in the Philippines, among other international contests.
The awardees are aged 15-29 who have won in any international and national competition within the last two school years.
Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim and Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez led officials in handing over plaques to the awardees.
