New Facebook game on environment launched
MANILA, Philippines – Alter Space, a new Facebook game about environmental protection, is now online.
Game developer James Lo of Indigo Entertainment said the game aims to educate gamers on one’s carbon footprint and how carbon emissions can be lowered.
Renewable energy developer Aboitiz Power Corp. sponsors Alter Space.
“Alter Space is not just a game on Facebook. It is a fun tool to teach users, especially the youth, about specific choices we can apply in our daily lives to protect the environment,” said Lo.
It took five months to develop the game, which also features mini-games such as sungka (an indigenous shell game).
“We tried to localize the game as much as possible by including mini-games such as sungka,” said Lo.
In the main game, players try to balance the planet’s carbom emission levels though tasks such as building a machine that would generate alternative energy.
If players fail to contain the rise in carbon emission levels, natural disasters like a heat wave would occur, affecting the interaction of a player’s avatar with that of other players.
There are some 18.1 million Filipinos who have Facebook accounts. Some 265 Facebook gamers spend an average of 210 minutes on games.
