Math, science winners get scholarship

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) awarded college scholarships to 22 Filipino students who won in recent international math and science competitions. 

Ester Ogena, director of the DOST’s Science Education Institute, handed scholarship certificates to students who bagged bronze medals in the FIRST Robotics Competition, International Mathematics Olympiad, and International Earth Science Olympiad.

Awarded with scholarships were Arjelle Agupitan, Catherine Marie Angangco, Charles Christopher Bataclan, Jose Paolo Bonifacio, Carlo David Cristobal, Brandon Cueto, Roger Remo Dandoy, Martha Isabel Dealino, Job Immanuel Encarnacion, Marxlen Endico, Cara Therese Evangelista, Koshneir Jimenez, Joshua Reginald Malapit, Henry Medina, Jr., Maria Socorro Kristina Medina, Timothy John Mora, Joel John Paz, Anton Philippe Tanquintic, and Charles Kevin Verdad, all students of the Philippine Science High School in Quezon City.

Lance Co Ting Keh and Ralph Ugalino of PSHS-Main, and Gio Elegado of PSHS-Bicol were given scholarships for winning at the IESO in Taiwan.

Carmela Antoinette Lao of St. Jude Catholic School was also awarded the special scholarship for her bronze at the IMO held in Bremen, Germany.

Ogena said the Special Science Scholarship Grants (SSSG) aim to recognize students who excel in science and mathematics.

“This is our way of ensuring that we nurture our young, talented, and gifted students.  We want to help them realize their dream of being scientists and engineers,” she said.      – Helen Flores
