Cagayan Valley's model OFWs named
TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – In recognition of their sacrifices for family and country, six overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) led by a widow who worked abroad for more than 30 years were named the region’s model OFWs.
Robert Bassig, regional director of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), said the regional search was part of the government’s recognition of millions of OFWs who had sacrificed their lives, braving “distance, uncertainty and loneliness to improve the welfare of their loved ones.”
This year’s awardees from Cagayan Valley are: For the land-based category, Antonina Aguinaldo-Eder from Cauayan City, Isabela, a domestic helper of 33 years, was proclaimed the regional winner.
Her husband’s death in 1973 did not deter her from giving their children a good education and eventually become professionals also working abroad.
Coming in second was Conrado Vallejos of Bayombong, an engineer in the Middle East; followed by Maria Aggabao-Fernandez of Cabagan, Isabela, a midwife for 23 years before spending 10 years abroad; and Jocelyn Danao of Peñablanca, Cagayan, who has worked abroad for 10 years.
For the sea-based category, sea captain Ramon Gapusan of Echague, Isabela, was declared winner for his 33 years of work as seaman. Aside from his only child, Gapusan toiled overseas to support several adopted children and send them to school. Henry Pagaddu of Peñablanca, Cagayan, a seaman for five years, was second.
“The award aims to recognize OFWs and their families who exemplify stability and enduring family ties, and outstanding community service while at the same time keeping the Philippine economy afloat in the face of economic turbulence,” Bassig said.
