Cavite-Corregidor Kayak Marathon set

MANILA, Philippines - Flex your muscles, bask in the sea and sun, and navigate the waters of Manila Bay as Sun and Sea Sports Systems, JCI- Ternate “Mardicas”, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, and the Philippine Kayaking Association holds the Cavite-Corregidor Kayak Marathon on Sept. 19-20.

The two-part 42-kilometer marathon, the second leg of the Philippine Kayaking Series (PKS) 2009, flags off at Caylabne Bay Resort in Ternate, Cavite and will circumnavigate the historic Corregidor Island.

According to PKA president and event organizer Val Camara, the PKS seeks to explore various bodies of water and establish a nationwide kayaking trail from the northern to the southern part of the archipelago.

He said that kayaking enables paddlers to be one with nature and reach the charming islets, coves and mangroves which cannot be reached by motorized boats.

Camara added that this race also intends to relive the valor and bravery of Filipino and American soldiers who defended Corregidor and Bataan during World War II.

The Series started with the Hundred Islands Summer Eco-Challenge in Alaminos, Pangasinan last summer and will conclude with the Cebu-Bohol Crossing in November.

The event, supported by Sun Cruises, Camaya Coast, Cebu Pacific Air, Mojos, Conquer, David’s Salon, Inquirer Interactive and Business Mirror, will also feature a free kayaking clinic and a novice race from Corregidor to Caballo Island and back.

For those not joining the race, PKA has organized package tours to the Dambana ng Kagitingan Shrine in Mt. Samat in Pilar, Bataan and Corregidor, which includes an evening Light and Sound Show at the Malinta Tunnel.

Participants will also hold a clean-up of the shores of Corregidor on Sept. 20 as part of the local observance of the International Coastal Clean-up Day.

The sporting event is also supported by the Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation, the provincial government of Cavite, local governments of Trece Martires City and Amadeo, Bokal Recto Cantimbuhan, Corregidor Foundation Inc., Hundred Islands Eco-Tourism Association (HIETA), Philippine Navy, Philippine Marines, Philippine Coast Guard, and Decisive Moments Photography.
